New Year brings Phuket B8bn boost

PHUKET: Phuket has enjoyed an influx of more than 265,000 visitors over the New Year holidays, generating more than B8 billion in tourism revenue, the head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket office has announced.

Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the TAT Phuket office, said that more than 600 flights landed at Phuket International Airport over the four days from last Friday through yesterday (Dec 29-Jan 1).

Over the four days there were 333 inbound international flights, about 83 flights a day, bringing a total of 63,836 inbound passengers, or 15,959 people a day, Mr Lertchai said.

In addition, there were 271 domestic flights, or 68 flights a day, bringing 36,026 inbound passengers, or 9,006 people a day, he said.

A sample survey was conducted of tourist accommodation operators covering 30% of each major tourist area on the island, accounting for a total of 101,556 rooms at 1,890 hotels, Mr Lertchai noted.

The survey found that hotels and other guest accommodations enjoyed an average occupancy of 81.69%, with guests staying on average 3.62 days.

In total, Phuket welcomed a total of 265,835 visitors over the four days, altogether generating B8.348bn in tourism revenue, Mr Lertchai said.
