The project would see the construction of a stadium incorporating a multi-purpose football field surrounded by an all weather athletics track, Phuket City Mayor Suppachok Laongphet explained at a press conference on Tuesday (May 26).
However, commencement of the project very much depends on public approval, explained Mr Suppachok.
The facility would include a standard-sized football field of 105 x 68 metres, conforming to FIFA standards and qualifies for international competitions, and an eight-lane athletics track. Additionally there would be a designated track and field area to host competitions in high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin, hammer throw, and discus throw, as well as an obstacle course and safety zone.
The project is being wholly funded by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) with a budget of B35 million, said Mr Suppachok, adding that the venue would stage a number of events at the National Youth Games in early 2028, which Phuket will host.
The site is comprised of approximately 11 rai (about 4.4 acres) and is located on the south side of the park, beside the plant nursery and alongside the Tha Kraeng Canal, Mr Suppachok revealed.
Despite not stipulating a completion date, Mr Suppachok confirmed that once construction is finished SAT will hand over the facility to Phuket City Municipality to manage moving forward.
Mr Suppachok explained that an extensive survey on all trees in the area where the stadium is set to be built is being conducted to determine their species, importance and quantity. Any trees impacted by the construction will be removed from the area, nurtured nearby and then replanted around the sports stadium to restore the green area, he said. Exceptions include palm oil trees and those that are decaying or dead, which will be cut down.
Mr Suppachok stated that any green light pertaining to the project very much depends on public approval. If the public denies approval for construction then it is believed the project would move to the Cherng Talay area, at a currently unspecified location.
Mr Suppachok revealed that the majority of the public that have submitted their views agree with the construction of the stadium as an important and worthwhile feature of the local community, although the opinions of any dissenters would still be heard, he added.
