The Kathu Substation was officially opened yesterday (May 6) by Mongkol Treekitjanon, Governor of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), joined by Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn and Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO) President Rewat Areerob, along with senior officials and private sector representatives.
The strong turnout reflected broad cooperation between government and industry in strengthening Phuket’s energy infrastructure as the island’s economy continues to expand.
Governor Nirat said Phuket, as a world-class tourism destination, has seen sustained growth, particularly in Kathu District, which has evolved into a key economic hub.
“The new substation is like a main artery for the area, boosting confidence among investors and the public,” he said. “It will support the continued expansion of tourism and real estate in a stable and sustainable way.”
According to Dr Mongkol, the substation was built at a cost of B247 million and features an indoor Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) system designed for high safety standards and efficient land use.
The facility is equipped with two 50-megavolt-ampere transformers, providing a combined capacity of 100MVA, and incorporates an automated management system capable of remote operation, reducing reliance on manual controls while improving accuracy and reliability.
A 20-kilowatt solar rooftop system has also been installed to supply electricity for internal use, helping cut greenhouse gas emissions and supporting carbon neutrality targets.
The substation can distribute electricity across 10 circuits at 33,000 volts, covering key areas throughout Kathu District, including Kathu Waterfall, government offices, and major golf courses such as Loch Palm Golf Club and Red Mountain Golf Club, as well as nearby cultural tourism sites.
