New Phuket road construction aimed at easing traffic congestion

PHUKET: A new five kilometre road is to be constructed between Baan Manik and Baan Don in attempt to ease traffic congestion in the area. The road will run thorough new high voltage power lines which are to put in place in the near future.

Phuket Highways Office director, Samak Luedwonghad, who was attending a ‘Governor Meets the Press’ meeting held at Provincial Hall on Tuesday (Jan 12) confirmed that the new road construction project is now under way following an agreement between officials as to where the new road should be constructed.

“Phuket Governor is pushing for plans to be put in place to solve traffic congestion on the island, especially in the Koh Kaew, Sri Soothorn and Thepkassattri sub-districts in Thalang and the route from Muang district to Phuket International Airport. The new road project is aimed at helping solve the issue,” Mr Samsak said.

“The initial budget for this new road project is said to be about B30M. The island has high potential to attract more travellers in the future and we need more and better roads to promote tourism now to inject income into the local economy,” he explained.

Governor Chamroen had assign OrBorJor and Phuket Rural Road Department to oversee the project and after discussing it with OrBorJor and OrBorTor officials, village headmen and other officials from the affected are it was agreed that the new road should be built.

“We decided to go ahead with the new road construction starting first in the area between Baan Manik-Baan Don. The road will be 5 kilometres long. With regards to other new roads, officials are surveying areas and discussing various projects, but many of these will affect land owners,” Mr Samsak said.
