Cherng Talay Police announced today (June 11) that the two suspects were apprehended in Surat Thani after investigators tracked them down using CCTV footage and other evidence gathered from the crime scene.
The case began when police received a report at about 7am on Monday (June 8) that a man’s body had been found on the road in front of the abandoned Dream Phuket Hotel and Spa in Moo 6, Cherng Talay.
Investigators, forensic officers and a forensic pathologist from Vachira Phuket Hospital attended the scene and found the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds. A knife sheath was also discovered near the body.
A black Honda PCX motorcycle was found parked nearby. Officers searching the vehicle located a passport identifying the deceased as Ye Min Kyaw, 45, a Myanmar national.
Led by Pol Lt Col Anurak Klangnarong, Deputy Superintendent of Investigations, and Pol Maj Chanasin Prateep Na Thalang, Superintendent of Investigations, Cherng Talay Police launched an intensive investigation.
Police interviewed witnesses, gathered forensic evidence and reviewed CCTV footage from the area where the body was found as well as along the suspects’ escape route.
The investigation identified two Myanmar nationals as suspects in the killing. Phuket Provincial Court subsequently approved warrants for their arrest on charges of jointly committing murder.
The suspects were named by police as Thein Myint, also known as ‘Jack’, and Kyaw Khaing, also known as ‘Chitmin’.
Police said CCTV footage captured the pair riding a motorcycle away from Soi Khoktanod 12, the area where the killing is believed to have taken place.
The two men were arrested yesterday (June 10) in the jurisdiction of Bang Maduea Police Station in Phunphin District, Surat Thani, before being transported back to Cherng Talay Police Station for legal proceedings.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as officers work to establish the motive for the killing and determine whether any other individuals were involved.
Authorities have vowed to pursue all those connected to the crime and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
