Chalong Police were notified of the accident at 11am.

Patrol police along with rescue workers arrived at the scene to find the truck, with “Chainarit Phuket Engineering Co Ltd” and “Ponthep Trading Co Ltd” emblazone on its side, by the side of the road with poles still scattered across the asphalt.

Myanmar man named only as “Cho”, 30, was riding in the back of the truck when the poles tumbled out, resulting in him suffering an injured left arm and at least on broken finger on his left hand.

Mr Cho was taken to the Accident & Emergency Department of the still-under-construction Chalong Hospital for treatment.

The truck driver, Virapun Meechai, 48, explained, “I was delivering the pipes from a company in Wichit to a hotel in Patong.

“The pipes were tied down for safety as usual, and Mr Cho was in the back of the truck to make sure that the pipes were secure.

“I changed gear to climb the hill and the force (of the gear change) caused the ropes to break. The pipes slid off the truck very quickly. Some of the pipes caught Mr Cho’s hand,” Mr Virapun said.

Police were dispatched to help direct traffic at the scene, and a truck with a crane attached was brought in to remove the spilled pipes and clear the road.
