Myanmar man drowns after ignoring red flag

PHUKET: A 20-year-old Myanmar man drowned off Kalim Beach after going for a swim in waters marked by a red ‘No Swimming’ flag earlier today (May 5).

CORRECTION / UPDATE: Both men drowned in the incident. Rescue workers recovered the body of one of the men on May 5. The body of Nay Myo Zaw was found washed ashore at Kalim Beach at about 1:50am May 6.


Police were informed of the incident at 12:23pm.

Friends of the Nay Myo Zaw told police that four of them had come to the beach together to relax, play guitar, drink alcohol and go for a swim.

However, Nay Myo Zaw and another man from their group had gone for a swim, ignoring a red flag posted in the area.

The men were soon caught in a rip current and started being swept out to sea.

Patong lifeguards on jet-skis and rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation with a dinghy managed to rescue one of the men, but not Nay Myo Zaw.

A search continued and his body was discovered about 20 minutes later.

A marine rescue boat provided by the Phuket Porvincial Administration Organisation (PPAO) soon and recovered Nay Myo Zaw’s body.
