Motorcyclist dies after slamming into garbage truck

PHUKET: A 62-year-old man has died after the motorcycle he was riding slammed into the back of a municipality garbage truck in front of Thalang Police Station yesterday evening (May 10).

The accident occurred at about 7:20pm, with Lt Sopanat Nayao of the Thalang Police and Thepkrasattri Municipality rescue workers quickly at the scene.

Still pinned into the back of the garbage truck was Honda Scoopy i scooter. Lying on the road beside the motorbike was Wichai Buasri, 62, unconscious.

Rescue workers rushed Mr Wichai to Thalang Hospital. He was later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town, where he died from his injuries this morning (May 11).

Garbage truck driver Somboon Thongluang, 51, told police that he was driving southbound doing his rounds as usual when he pulled over to collect garbage.

“The next thing he knew was that the motorcycle had slammed into the back of the truck very hard,” Lt Sopanat said.

Police have yet to press any charges over the incident as they are continuing their investigation, Lt Sopanat confirmed.
