The project, carried out in partnership with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), will see overhead power and telecommunications lines moved underground across five key roads in Patong in a bid to improve safety, enhance the city’s appearance and support tourism growth.

The contract for the project was awarded to Asefa Public Co Ltd, with Patong Municipality contributing B84.45mn and the Provincial Electricity Authority B137.53mn.

Construction of the full project is expected to take up to 360 days.

The works form part of an ongoing infrastructure upgrade covering Haad Patong Rd, Ruamjai Rd, Sawasdirak Rd, Prachanukhro Rd and Bangla Rd, all key tourism areas in Patong.

According to Ms Lalita, the project is aimed at improving the reliability of the electricity distribution system, reducing risks from overhead cabling and enhancing the streetscape in high-traffic areas.

She warned that construction, beginning with Haad Patong Rd and Ruamjai Rd, may cause temporary traffic disruptions and restricted access in some areas during certain periods.

“The project forms part of a long-term plan to move overhead power and telecommunications lines underground across key tourism areas in Patong, covering approximately 1.8 kilometres, in order to reduce safety risks, minimise visual clutter and support the area’s tourism-driven economy,” Mayor Lalita said at the launch of the Bangla section of the project in November last year.

Ms Lalita urged residents, business operators and visitors to plan their travel accordingly, apologising for any inconvenience caused.
