City of Phuket, local administrations and tourist businesses will work together to set up CCTV for all tourists destinations in Phuket to help prevent crime in the areas, Governor Nisit told the press following a meeting at Phuket provincial Hall with Phuket Provincial Police chief Maj Gen Pachara Boonyasit and business leaders.

"Tourist safety is crucial for Phuket. Whenever crime rears its ugly head, it can severely affect the tourism industry, which raises the question of how we can better prevent crime and ensure safety for all tourists with limited man power," said Governor Nisit.

Currently we have only 1,000 police officers on patrol in Phuket. If we set up more CCTV cameras across the island, especially in tourists spots, we can help ensure better safety for tourists and help police track criminals more easily.

Phuket currently has 647 CCTV cameras operated by the police and another 611 operated by the OrBorTor.

At least 10 hotels have agreed to help with funding the additional cameras, said the governor. However, he did not reveal the proposed number of new cameras to be installed nor the amount of funding required.
