Four divers were sent down at 8am this morning to the sunken vessel and just before 11am located the body of Shani Maril, from Israel, about 100 metres from the wreck, said Suwatchara Worapradit from the Krabi Department for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
Shani was the only victim of the disaster on the ferry, which was carrying 115 passengers – 107 adults and 8 children – on a one-day cruise from Phi Phi to Phuket via Nopparatthara Beach in Krabi. Apart from Shani, everyone was rescued unharmed.
The vessel caught fire and sank close to Nopparatthara Beach. The captain, Wirat Jittraporn, 51, said the fire started in the engine room. An electrical short-circuit is suspected but this has yet to be confirmed.
