Thalang Police were notified of the collision at about 6:45am after receiving a report from the 191 emergency radio centre.
Officers were dispatched to the scene on the outbound lanes of Thepkrasattri Rd opposite the SuperCheap Muang Mai store, where the crash had occurred about 10 minutes earlier.
Police identified the deceased as Wichian Kreuphanich, an 89-year-old resident of Thepkrasattrri Subdistrict.
According to the police report, Mr Wichian had parked his motorcycle on the outbound side of the road before attempting to cross to the inbound side to buy goods. Police said he was a regular customer at Muang Mai Market each morning.
As he crossed the road, he was struck by a Yamaha motorcycle being ridden by Ronnaporn Phrommuang, 44, from Trang.
Both men were taken to Thalang Hospital. Hospital staff later confirmed that Mr Wichian had succumbed to his injuries.
Rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation reported arriving at the scene at 5:55am to find Mr Wichian unconscious, without a pulse and not breathing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was immediately started before he was transferred to Thalang Hospital.
The foundation reported that Mr Wichian had suffered a severe laceration to his left arm and a serious injury to his right leg.
Mr Ronaporn sustained a deep head laceration, facial injuries and complained of neck pain. He was conscious when taken to Thalang Hospital for treatment.
Police said further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision is continuing.
The case is being investigated by Pol Lt Natta Sripakorn of Thalang Police Station.
