Karon Police were alerted to the discovery at about 11:30pm.
Officers arrived at the scene, in the jungle behind the Sabai Corner Restaurant, to find the body of Haschai Khaokhem, 40.
His head was resting on his backpack. A head-mounted flashlight and a rudimentary pellet rifle lay nearby.
With the aid of rescue volunteers from the Kusoldharm Foundation and forensic experts from Vachira Phuket Hospital, police began their investigation.
The initial examination revealed no visible wounds or signs of foul play on Mr Haschai’s body.
Police believe Mr Haschai died two days before his body was found.
Mr Haschai’s girlfriend told police that he left to go foraging in the jungle at about 4am on Saturday (May 4). Joining Mr Haschai was a companion she knew only as ‘Mr Chana’.
However, Mr Haschai had failed to return home by Sunday evening, leading to a search being launched. Mr Chana discovered his body and alerted authorities..
Mr Haschai’s body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further medical examination while police continue their investigation.
