Deputy Commander of the Region 8 Police Lt Gen Chalit Thinthanee and Thalang Police Chief Col Sompong Thiparpakul were both present when the announcement was made at 4pm today, and more than 150 police officers from Thalang, Sakoo and Tha Chatchai police station were in attendance.
Lt Gen Chalit said, “I am pleased to preside over this ceremony and announce a campaign aimed at ridding the island of drugs and crime. Along with local police officers, officials from local administration offices will also be helping out during this campaign.
“It is now close to high season so many people will be visiting the island and there will be many activities lined up for this period so high security is a must.
“We have to be vigilant and provide tourists with maximum security. Every department must sacrifice and fully support this campaign. We must not neglect our responsibilities and must do our best for the safety of the public,” he said.
Col Sompong added, “This is an on going campaign for us to prevent crime and rid the island of criminals so that safety of the people can be assured, especially during high season. This campaign is an order from the National Police.
“This time of the year does not only bring more tourists to Phuket, but also crime, other illegal activities and accidents on Phuket’s road.
“Today we have officers patrolling many areas to show people that we are ready to handle any situation, keep the public safe and keep up the country’s good tourism image,” he said.
