Laguna back on top in Phuket 40-Over League

CRICKET: Laguna claimed victory over a Thalang with an impressive 293-10 from 40.5 overs including a century from big-hitting Ali Khan (109 from 64 balls) to take the lead in the Phuket Cricket Group (PCG) 40-Over League match at the Alan Cooke Ground last Sunday (February 22).

Thalang could only manage 168-10 in 38.1 overs in the loss as they sit in last place in the four-team league.

Laguna chose to field first since they knew the key to victory was removing the opening pair of Andrew Macmillan and Justin Thomatos, who put on a record breaking partnership of 209 against them last year.

Laguna struck in the 6th over removing Macmillan (10) with a catch by Stuart Reading. Just before the 10 over break, they also captured Simon Wetherell (3) which brought Carl Baxter (34) to the crease. The threat of Thomatos (34) remained, however this was quickly snuffed out when Sameer Khan clean bowled him on his first throw in the 16th over.

Pao (11) and Baxter put on a stabilising 30-run partnership taking Thalang through to the 20 over break. However, Pao was caught mid-wicket in the 22nd while Baxter fell in the 26th with the score on 118-5.

Craig Murphy (35) and Gary Lane (14) then put on a valuable 40-run partnership before Murphy was caught in the 34th over. Laguna then captured the remaining four Thalang wickets for just 10 runs – Thalang being bowled out for 168 in 38.1 overs.

Pick of the bowlers for Laguna were Iqbal Malik (3 for 27), Nadeem Youseff (3 for 39), Sameer Khan (2 for 30) and Arif Mushtaq (1 for 17).

Laguna took a chance with the opening pair of Ali Khan (109 from 64 balls) and Nadeem Youseff (27) which paid dividends. The steady Youseff worked the ball around, while Khan launched an assault.

Youseff eventually fell in the 12th over with the score on 80. Manish Sadarangani (37) then combined with Khan to put on a further 104-run partnership to secure the first inning's points.

Spectators enjoyed the spectacle as Khan hit seven 4’s and eight 6’s (including three-in-a-row from one of Gary Lane’s overs) with balls being hit out of the ground as quickly as they were being retrieved. Khan eventually was dismissed in the 29th over with the score on 206-4.

Laguna continued to score with Sameer Khan (40) and Roly Cooper (20) combining for a 34-run partnership, followed by Cooper and Aaron Reading (11) for a further 28-runs and taking their total for 293-10.

Pick of the bowlers for Thalang were Gary Lane (4 for 65) and Simon Wetherell (2 for 8).

Next Sunday (March 1) ICC will take on Patong, expected to be another cracker of a match at the Alan Cooke Ground – 10am start time. For more information on cricket in Phuket or to join, visit phuketcricketgroup.com or email chairman@phuketcricketgroup.com.
