The incident began when a Myanmar man was involved in a collision between two motorbikes on the Bang Tao beach road at about midday on Tuesday (Apr 23), Pol Col Weeraphong explained.
Traffic Police were informed of the accident and arrived at the scene to see the Myanmar man, not named in police reports, fleeing on his motorbike.
Traffic Police pursued the man, who dumped his motorbike in front of a workers’ camp in Soi Bang Tao 12, about 500 metres away, and ran inside the camp
The officers ran into the camp and confronted the man, who pulled out a long knife and threatened the officers with it.
Police tried calming down the man, repeatedly asking him to put down the knife. The man refused. He was inchoerent and appeared drunk, and kept “talking circles”, Pol Col Weeraphong said.
The officers called for backup, which soon arrived, with five to six officers now at the scene. The officers continued to try to convince the man to put the knife down and surrender, but to no avail.
After 30 minutes, officers were finally close enough to move in and subdue the man with a taser.
The man was taken to Cherng Talay Police Station and charged accordingly, Pol Col Weeraphong confirmed.
“He posed a danger to society,” he said.
The Man tested positive for alcohol “above the legal limit”. Pol Col Weeraphong said he ordered a urine test to detect any additional drug usage.
“In this case, the case was prosecuted accordingly. The legal process is complete. Cherng Talay Police officers followed standard operating procedure in police tactics as set out by the Royal Thai Police,” Pol Col Weeraphong said.
