HM the King, 84, who is widely revered, was diagnosed with diverticulitis, a condition that is relatively common among the elderly and can cause stomach pain.
His blood pressure, temperature and breathing were normal, the Royal Household Bureau said in a statement released late Sunday.
The king was admitted to hospital in September 2009 for treatment of a respiratory condition and has rarely left since then, aside from a few public appearances including a public speech in early December on his birthday.
Any discussion of the royal family is extremely sensitive in politically turbulent Thailand, where the palace has been silent over the organisation of the eventual succession.
