Phuket authorities opened registration for the scheme through the ‘Tung Ngern’ system, allowing merchants to sign up either online or in person at Krungthai Bank branches.
However, most applicants chose to register online, citing the convenience and speed of the digital system, which eliminates long queues and the need for face-to-face contact with officials.
According to Phuket officials, the total number of registered merchants included 22 in Mueang District (22.9%), 11 in Kathu (11.5%) and 13 in Thalang (13.5%), while 50 applicants – more than half (52.1%) – submitted their applications through the online system.
The low initial turnout comes despite a strong government push to encourage participation. Local authorities have launched the ‘Phuket 120 Days Nonstop’ outreach campaign, aimed at driving awareness and supporting small vendors to join the co-payment program.
At 4pm on the launch day, Kathu District Chief Akkaraphon Suthirak Chittsuphap and Senior District Officer Thamrong Chuay-akson led a team of local officials to Si Kor Fresh Market in Kathu to promote the scheme and help merchants register. Officials provided guidance on document preparation, registration steps and how to access benefits through the programme.
“The ‘Khon La Krueng Plus’ project is a key government measure to reduce the cost of living for residents and stimulate local spending,” Mr Akkaraphon said. “We will continue promoting the program to ensure every shop and community can benefit fully.”
To increase registration coverage, Phuket authorities have coordinated with Krungthai Bank and local administrative organisations to set up mobile service points across the island. The registration support schedule includes:
* Oct 15–17: Phuket Provincial Hall, Kathu District Office, Thalang District Office
* Oct 20–22: Rawai and Karon areas
* Oct 24: Mai Khao, Sala Phikun Thong
* Oct 27: Pa Khlok Subdistrict Municipality
* Oct 28: Kamala Child Development Center
The Khon La Krueng Plus scheme offers a 50% government co-payment on purchases of eligible goods and services, helping ease living costs while boosting income for small local businesses.
Krungthai Bank has advised existing users of the ‘Pao Tang’ app to ensure it is updated to the latest version before joining the program. Those changing personal details such as phone numbers can visit any Krungthai Bank branch to update their information.
Both new and existing merchants must have their documents verified by district offices before final submission to Krungthai Bank for approval. Once approved, the ‘Khon La Krueng Plus’ menu will appear in the ‘Tung Ngern’ app.
To qualify, merchants must be Thai nationals, operate verifiable small businesses (with annual revenue under B1.8 million), and must not be part of a franchise or have been suspended from previous government support schemes.
Phuket officials said they expect merchant participation to grow steadily over the coming weeks, particularly as more vendors become familiar with the online registration system.
“The ‘Khon La Krueng Plus’ project plays a crucial role in strengthening the grassroots economy and supporting small entrepreneurs,” the Phuket Provincial Public Relations Office noted. “With continued cooperation from all sectors, the program will help drive sustainable local economic growth.”
In its latest promotional push this morning, in calling for merchants to register for the scheme, local public relations officials posted the comment: “We confirm that no information will be sent to the Revenue Department.”
