Each year authorities announce “water play zones” for Songkran, with safety the primary reason given for delineating where people can – and cannot – enthusiastically join in the Thai New Year celebrations.

To this, The Phuket News asked readers, “Should Songkran water play zones be regulated?”

A resounding 74 per cent of respondents to the poll voiced their support for water-play zones, but differentiated on the extent and size of the zones to be used.

“The entire island should be made a special zone with regulated behaviour – no exceptions,” said 24% of respondents.

A further 25% voted, “Set zones with specific guidelines on behaviour, as is done now.”

The most popular response, garnering 27% of all votes cast in the poll, called for different types of zones to be set to cater to different people, namely to, “Set zones, but rate them differently as zones for families and zones for adults.”

While support for water-play zones gained huge support in the poll, 24% of respondents urged, “Abolish the zones – all normal laws regarding behaviour still apply during the holidays.”
