The DNP poll was launched online at 4pm today (Oct 12).
As of 5:50pm, a total of 8,830 votes had been cast, with 99.1% voting “Agree” to close both popular sites to tourism.
The poll had also already garnered more than 1,500 comments.
In asking people to cast their votes, the DNP notes, “We ask you to cast your vote to manage the environment at ‘Maya Bay and Loh Samah Bay’, which are closed tourism attractions in order to restore both areas of Nopparatthara - Nopparat Thara National Park, Krabi province.”
“Do you agree for the DNP to keep Maya Baya and Loh Samah Bay closed to tourism?” is the simple question asked.
The poll offers only two options: “Agree” and “Disagree”.

The results can be seen in real time, but only people who cast votes may post their comments underneath. The comments are kept anonymous.
One such comment read, “In addition to extending the period of closure, the government and related agencies must issue regulations to restrict tourists, and (if the sites re-open to tourists) must limit the number of hours that tourists can visit the bays.
“Also officials must encourage and focus on eco-tourism, and law enforcement must be strict on both Thais and foreign tourists. It is time to conserve nature and take care of it.”
Another comment read, “Not surprised about extending the closure period, but more advance notice should have been given.”
Worapoj Lomlim, Chief of the Hat Nopparat- Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, confirmed to The Phuket News that the poll was not orchestrated by his office.
“This poll is not by me. It was created with the involvement of many organisations,” he said.
