The festival, held in front of Kathu Municipality, was officially opened on Wednesday (Feb 26) by Vice Governor Theeraphong Chuaychoo, with Kathu Mayor Wannayut Suthikul, heads of government departments, private sector representatives and residents in attendance.

Now in its 14th year, the annual event highlights the long history of Kathu Subdistrict, regarded as one of Phuket’s oldest communities and home to the island’s first shrine. Officials say the festival reflects ongoing efforts to develop cultural tourism while preserving the area’s unique traditions, cuisine and way of life – often referred to locally as ‘The Kathu Way’.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Governor Theeraphong said the event encourages recognition of cultural heritage as a valuable asset that can generate jobs and income for local people. He noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s policy of promoting Thai “soft power” through arts, culture and community identity.

Mayor Wannayut said the municipality aims to make the cultural street a source of pride and a learning centre for visitors interested in Kathu’s “Nai Thu” culture, while also stimulating the local economy and strengthening community ties.

Throughout the three-day festival, visitors have enjoyed a nostalgic atmosphere showcasing the identity of old Kathu. Activities have included a “Nong Bie Lan” photo booth, street performances, traditional Chinese costume photography at Kathu Shrine, sales of antique toys, Phu Cheng music performances and tricycle rickshaw services for elderly residents.

Organisers said the event represents cooperation between government agencies, the private sector and the local community to create a creative economic space, support small entrepreneurs and provide opportunities for young people to participate in preserving local cultural heritage.

Residents and tourists are invited to visit the Kathu Cultural Street today for the final day of celebrations under the theme “Community Lifestyles on the Cultural Street”, experiencing local food, performing arts and traditional wisdom rooted in the area’s history.
