In a public notice, the Kamala OrBorTor apologised to residents for the disturbance and explained that an investigation found the incident was linked to recent adjustments made to the system by a contractor.
According to the notice, the contractor had been working on the system’s automatic on-off functions and is now implementing further improvements to prevent a similar incident from occurring again.
"The Kamala Subdistrict Administrative Organisation sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks everyone who reported the incident and provided cooperation," the statement said.
Kamala OrBorTor later confirmed that the public address system was tested again, resulting in the national anthem being broadcast again at 10am and 11am while technicians investigated and repaired the fault.
Officials explained that the tests were necessary following the early-morning malfunction and said the contractor had been contacted to carry out repairs.
The incident prompted widespread discussion online, with residents sharing a mixture of concern, humour and understanding.
Several commenters said they were startled awake by the unexpected broadcast, while others joked about standing to attention or mistaking the sound for a supernatural occurrence.
One resident noted that the timing had caused particular concern because it coincided with the standard tsunami alert tests.
"The problem is, it overlapped with the tsunami warning, causing people to misunderstand that it was a tsunami warning," one commenter wrote.
Others called for the issue to be fixed quickly, while many expressed sympathy for officials and contractors involved, noting that mistakes can happen and praising the organisation for issuing an apology and responding promptly.
Kamala OrBorTor reiterated its apology and assured residents that steps are being taken to ensure the public address system functions normally in future.
