One beachgoer raised the issue with The Phuket News, saying, “Two vendors on the beach told us that they were not allowed to sell alcohol anymore.
“They said the military had ordered the ban and that anyone found drinking alcohol on the beach would be arrested and fined.”
However, that understanding was news to Col Chaiwat, who this afternoon told The Phuket News, “Selling alcohol on public land – including the beach – is illegal, but we will not take any action against people drinking alcohol (in moderation) on Patong Beach.”
The Phuket News has yet to confirm the military’s latest understanding of the policy in Phuket.
The beachgoer noted his concern about the unclear state of the beach rules, as some rules are forced strongly, while enforcement of other rules – and depending on the beach where the rules are being enforced – vary.
“Tourists are not sure what we can do – and cannot do – anymore. It’s terrible, as this can stop a lot of people from coming to Phuket,” he said.
