Mushroom soup, also known as kaeng oom in Thai, is an original spicy soup from Thailand’s northeast.
One of the most popular vendors in Phuket is Satien Kitpajam, aged 42, who is originally from Roi Et province.
He is the owner of the kaeng oom food stall in the Banzaan Market, behind the Jungceylon shopping mall in Patong.
Mr Satien has been living in Phuket for eight years, but has only sold mushroom soup for one and a half.
Before that, he sold fruit in the same area, but noticed there was a real demand for kaeng oom.
There are a lot of people in the area originally from Isarn so he thought it would be a good business to open.
Mr Satien uses an original recipe for his kaeng oom, which is made from different types of mushrooms, chilli, vegetables, Thai herbs, and the famous Isarn ingredient, pla ra, also known as fermented fish sauce.
He also serves mushroom soup with frog meat (very popular with his Isarn customers) plus chicken and shellfish. He also has a dish which includes small white eggs from the red ant.
Many people believe eating mushroom soup is good for your health, and can help with losing weight, diabetes and allergies.
Mr Satien’s soup starts at B50, and his stall is open every day from 5.30pm to 10pm.
