The accident occurred at around 5:40am at the three-way intersection on Wichit Songkram Rd near the entrance to Prince of Songkla University’s Phuket campus.
Pol Lt Col Natchaya Suphanphong, an investigator with Kathu Police, was notified and dispatched to the scene along with rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation.
At the scene, authorities found a white Toyota pickup truck, registered in Phuket, overturned on its side with severe damage to the front of the vehicle.
The Irish driver was trapped inside the cab and required more than 40 minutes of extraction using hydraulic cutting tools. He was then rushed to Bangkok Hospital Phuket for emergency treatment.
CCTV footage reviewed by police showed the pickup traveling toward Phuket Town shortly before the crash.
The footage showed the vehicle veering into the median strip, striking a lamppost before losing control and crashing into a six-wheeled staff shuttle belonging to the Phuket Graceland Resort.
The shuttle was carrying several hotel employees at the time, but no injuries among them were immediately reported.
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
