This year’s event is being organised in conjunction with Phuket Rugby by Strategic Sports, and the venue will be the excellent facilities at the Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club.
The Coffin Dodgers Vets tournament kicks off the Rugby 10s on Friday, 24 May, and 16 teams will compete in the main competition on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, including last year’s champions the Morrabbin Rams from Australia, who will field two sides.
Along with old favorites the Bedok Kings, Singapore 2013 Champions the Wanderers, Thai hopefuls Prince of Songkla University, and the Asian Japanese Dragons, we welcome back from Australia the Groote Eylandt Mudchooks and the Melanins from Japan.
First timers Jakarta Komodos, Manila Nomads and Alor Star Blues will be serious contenders for the cup, as will Kowloon RFC from Hong Kong, Selangor Dogs, Taipei Baboons and Al Ain Amblers.
The tournament hosts Phuket Vagabonds will field one of their strongest sides since they finished runners-up in 2002, and hope to be amongst the finals come Sunday.
The Coffin Dodgers Vets competition is again expected be a close-run affair, with the defending Morrabbin Rams and Singapore’s Wanderers among the serious contenders.
Age is finally beginning to tell on the Cottesloe teams and they will combine to put out their strongest side from Perth Australia, who will be looking to get revenge for last years early exit and go all the way.
The Hong Kong Bulls return to the tournament this year and newcomers Think Pink New Zealanders from Singapore, Extinct Volcanos from Philippines and Taipei Silverbacks all appear strong and should be in the mix come finals day on Sunday.
We also welcome back the Qantas Koalas the Selangor Dog from Malaysia, who will raise the volume of the singing off the field as well as the play on it.
Phuket’s veteran team the Viagrabonds will be trying to retain the trophy they have held for the last three years, but the annual Weasel Cup will not be played for this year as their rivals the Bangkok Bangers cant field a team.
Saturday and Sunday will also feature youth rugby teams showing their talents in an Under 13s and Under 16s tournament, with their hosts the Phuket Lomas youth team looking to win both competitions on home soil against the Centaurs from Singapore, the Bangkok Lions and Krabi.
Entry to the tournament grounds at Thannyapura SLC in Thalang district is free and all are welcome to come along and watch or participate.
