The meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall focused on expanding practical cooperation between Phuket and Hungary in key areas including water resource management, trade, investment, education and sustainable development.

Governor Nirat said Phuket has strong economic potential and remains capable of supporting foreign investment, driven by both Thai citizens and foreign residents living on the island. He stressed, however, that future development must proceed alongside a review of legal mechanisms to ensure balanced growth and a sustainable environment for residents and businesses.

“Water management was highlighted as a priority issue for the province, with the governor noting that effective water systems are directly linked to quality of life, public safety and the long-term sustainability of Phuket’s tourism sector,” he explained.

He said the province is open to exchanging expertise, technology and best practices with countries that have experience in managing water resources and disaster risks.

Dr Szilvia praised the direction of Phuket’s water management policies, saying she has closely followed the governor’s work in this area.

“Hungary has long-standing expertise in water and disaster management and is interested in developing concrete cooperation with Phuket at the local level,” she noted.

The Ambassador also formally introduced the Honorary Consul of Hungary in Phuket, Thanusak Phungdet, who will act as a coordinating link between Hungarian and local authorities, as well as the private sector, to support tangible cooperation in trade, investment, business and education.

Education was identified as a key area for future collaboration, with Dr Szilvia noting Hungary’s scholarship programmes at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.

“Hungary plans to award about 40 scholarships next year and expressed interest in expanding cooperation related to Buddhism and sustainable development,” she said.

Also attending the meeting were Kusumal Pongsitthaworn, President of the Phuket Provincial Red Cross; Narong On-in, Head of the Phuket Provincial Office; and Thammawat Wongcharoenyos, President of the Phuket Provincial Sports Association.
