Hit-and-run Phuket water truck driver surrenders, charged with reckless driving

PHUKET: The driver of a water truck belonging to the Italian-Thai Development Co Ltd who was involved in a hit-and-run incident on bypass road last Wednesday (Feb 24) surrendered to police the following day and was charged with reckless driving causing death and injury.

Lt Col Chana Suthimas of Phuket City Police told The Phuket News today (Mar1), “The driver of the water truck was not at the scene when we arrived, but we were told later that night that he helped rescue workers transport the victims to hospital.

“Apparently he was in a panic, however, he turned himself in the next morning,” he said.

“He was charged with reckless driving causing death and injury,” he added.

The injured motorcyclist, 28-year-old Mr Weera Morthong, was discharged from hospital the next day.

The family of the deceased, 40-year-old Mr Cheriya Johi from India, has since taken his body home for funeral rites.

Both Mr Weera and the family of Mr Johi have been paid compensation by the vehicle insurance company.
