Heavy weather forecast to intensify

PHUKET: The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning of more heavy rain forecast along the Andaman coast through to Friday (Sept 29), with heavy downpours and gusts of wind expected to instensify on Wednesday.

The warning, issued by TMD Director-General Chompharee Chomphurat at 5am today, marked that active weather systems across the region wioll see the southwest monsoon strengthen on the Andaman Sea.

Wind waves in the upper Andaman Sea are expected to reach two to three metres high, and more than three metres high in thunderstorm areas. The lower Andaman Sea is expected to see wind waves of about two metres high, reaching over two metres in thundershower areas.

“Boaters should navigate with caution and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms throughout the period and small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should refrain from sailing from shore during 26 - 29 September 2023,” Ms Chompharee warned.

The Phuket Marine Office has for days repeatedly issued its notice to all boat operators to ensure all they comply with all safety regulations before putting to sea.

The heavy to very heavy rain may cause flash floods, especially in areas of mountain slopes, near waterways and in low-lying areas, Ms Chompharee noted.

People were also urged to exercise caution in open areas, especially near large trees or large billboards or signs.

All people were urged to keep up to date with further weather reports for safety.
