The refugees broke out of a facility for human-trafficking victims in Rattaphum district. Local villagers informed authorities of the aliens' whereabouts in a forest in Ban Nikhom village of the same sub-district in Kamphaeng Phet sub-district where they were apprehended.

Officials believed the other five Rohingya migrants were still hiding in the locality.

Security was stepped up at the centre where more than 100 illegal immigrants were accommodated. Officials said the aliens tried to escape to travel on to a third-party country.

The escape came five days after Rohingyas in a detention camp in the South staged a protest against officials who had refused to let them bring food into their dormitory to celebrate an Islamic holiday.

The refugees cut the power supply and tried to break open doors before police were called in.
