Phuket Tourist Police identified the Ukrainian man as Artur Kostenko, who was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

According to CCTV footage, the accident occurred at about 4:30pm, Phuket Tourist Police reported.

The force of the impact left the taxi with heavy damage to its front right, and to both doors on the taxi’s left side.

The Yamaha big bike Mr Kostenko was riding was left with heavy damage in the gutter beside the traffic island in front of the underpass power control room on the far side of the intersection.

Mr Kostenko last entered Phuket on Nov 2 and is staying on a ‘temporary resident visa’ (NON-90), which expires on Jan 3, police confirmed.

The Yamaha big bike (model ont reported) was registered in Phuket and registered with Mr Kostenko as the owner, police noted.

CCTV footage showed that Mr Kostenko was travelling north on the bypass road when he stopped for a red light at the intersection.

When the traffic light turned green, he moved off quickly, but only after traffic light was green.

The green-plate taxi, a Toyota Altis driven by Naphatphong Thipprapai, 37, was travelling from Phra Phuket Kaew Rd towards Yaowarat Rd.

The taxi was travelling “very quickly” and struck Mr Kostenko, police reported.

Mr Kostenko was wearing a helmet when he was struck by the taxi.

Officers went to Vachira Phuket Hospital to meet with relatives and friends of Mr Kostenko, and explain the situation to them, police said. Mobile phone numbers for both Phuket City Police Chief Pol Col Pratheung Phonmana and Pol Lt Col Ekachai Siri of the Phuket Tourist Police were provided.

Officials at the Ukrainian embassy have been informed, police said.

Of note, the official incident report by police made no mention that by their own report from CCTV footage, for the taxi to enter the intersection at speed and hit Mr Kostenko, taxi driver Naphatphong must have sped through a red light.

The report also made no mention of charges against Naphatphong at this stage.
