Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsithavorn on Friday (Apr 17) led a delegation of senior officials and private sector representatives on an inspection tour of the island’s EV bus service, highlighting the project as a cornerstone of Phuket’s green transport strategy.
Joining the visit were Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) President Rewat Areerob, Phuket Provincial Palad (Chief Administration Officer) Rungruang Thimabut, Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) Chief Adcha Buachan, as well as representatives from the Phuket Chamber of Commerce and Phuket City Development Company (PKCD.
Officials rode one of the electric buses during the visit to assess progress and promote the adoption of clean energy public transport, which they say is key to transforming Phuket into a sustainable “green city”.
Governor Nirat said the island’s high demand for transport makes the shift to electric vehicles both necessary and timely, particularly amid volatile global oil prices driven by unrest in the Middle East.
“With more than 40 EV buses already in operation, this initiative helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigates the risk of fare increases linked to rising fuel costs,” he said.
He added that Phuket authorities are working with all sectors to expand EV charging infrastructure across the island, aiming to ensure coverage in every community and build public confidence in switching to electric vehicles.
Mr Rewat said the PPAO has prioritised reducing residents’ cost of living by capping EV bus fares at B15 per route, while granting free travel to five groups: children, students, the elderly, people with disabilities and monks.
He also confirmed plans to expand routes, including a key link from Phuket International Airport to Rawai Beach, and to extend services to Koh Kaew to better connect northern parts of the island with Phuket Town.
In preparation for the new school term beginning May 15, the PPAO and PKCD will introduce additional promotions and dedicated student shuttle services to ease transport costs for families affected by rising fuel prices.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Electricity Authority has assured officials that Phuket’s power supply is sufficient to support the growing number of electric vehicles.
Authorities say the combined measures position Phuket as a model for sustainable urban transport, with the EV bus network expected to play a central role in reducing emissions, lowering travel costs and improving accessibility across the island.
