The directive, issued to all relevant agencies and local administrative bodies, requires immediate action to inspect and restore the island’s drainage network to full working condition as Phuket enters the rainy season.
Under the order, the Department of Highways (DOH), Department of Rural Roads (DRR), the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO), along with all municipalities and subdistrict administrative organisations (OrBorTor), must deploy officials and engineering teams to roads under their jurisdiction.
Teams have been instructed to inspect and remove obstructions from drainage systems, including blocked pipes, grates and manhole covers, to ensure water can flow efficiently during heavy rainfall.
Governor Nirat stressed that the priority is to ensure drainage systems function immediately during downpours, without delays that could lead to water accumulation on road surfaces.
“The key is making the pipes work properly,” he said, noting that effective drainage would help reduce the risk of road accidents and maintain traffic flow during adverse weather.
He added that the effort is also crucial to preserving Phuket’s image as a world-class tourist destination, particularly as the island transitions into the wetter months.
Officials across the province have already begun responding to the order, with personnel deployed to clear high-risk and low-lying areas. Authorities will continue monitoring weather conditions closely and adjust operations as needed to mitigate flooding risks.
