Governor delivers aid to workers’ camp fire victims as shelter numbers fall

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn led a delegation from the Phuket Provincial Red Cross Committee, the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM) and other agencies to Wat Cherng Talay on Tuesday (June 9) to distribute relief supplies and check on the welfare of people displaced by the recent fire at the Bang Jo workers' camp.

The visit took place at the temporary shelter established at Wat Cherng Talay, where officials presented "Compassion Kits" containing essential supplies to victims affected by the blaze that destroyed accommodations at the workers’ camp in Srisoonthorn last week.

Governor Nirat was joined by Phuket DDPM chief Warat Surawadee, members of the Phuket Red Cross Committee, government officials, representatives of relevant agencies and local leaders.

During the visit, the governor met with displaced residents, offered words of encouragement and listened to concerns about living conditions at the shelter.

He said Phuket authorities would continue working with all sectors to ensure those affected receive ongoing support and assistance until they are able to return to normal life.

"We will integrate cooperation from all sectors to continuously care for, assist and rehabilitate those affected until they can return to normal life," Gov Nirat said.

Officials also reported progress in relocating workers following the fire.

According to provincial officials, an additional 60 workers have now been moved back to the original Bang Jo camp, bringing the total number of residents who have returned there to 110.

At the same time, 150 displaced workers have been relocated to a reserve accommodation site on Soi Layan 1/1.

As a result, the number of people staying at the temporary shelter at Wat Cherng Talay has fallen to 90.

Governor Nirat said the relocations are part of efforts to gradually restore the shelter to normal operations while ensuring affected workers have suitable accommodation.

Conditions at the shelter remain orderly, with company staff and local agencies continuing to provide food, essential services and other support, he said.

Relevant agencies will continue monitoring the situation and providing assistance until recovery efforts are complete and all affected residents have been fully accommodated, Governor Nirat assured.
