Global conferences in Phuket to generate B351mn boost

PHUKET: Phuket has secured bids to host three major international conferences in 2026, with organisers projecting a combined economic impact of B351.4 million and the creation of 484 jobs, reinforcing the island’s standing as a global MICE destination.

The successful bids were supported by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), which this month highlighted Phuket as a model MICE city for aligning international events with its long-term development strategy.

The three conferences – focused on sustainability, equality and wellness – are expected to attract around 2,100 delegates from around the world, the TCEB reported.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026 (GSTC 2026), organised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and hosted locally by the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation (STDF) will be held from Apr 21-24 at the Royal Phuket City Hotel and Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town.

The InterPride General Meeting & World Conference 2026, organised by the InterPride and co-hosted locally by Naruemit Pride Co, the Foundation for the SOGI Rights and Justice (FOR-SOGI) and Andaman Power Association Phuket (Phuket Pride), will take place from Oct 28 to Nov 1 at Duangjitt Resort and Spa.

The Global Wellness Summit 2026 (GWS 2026), organised by the Global Wellness Institute, is scheduled for Nov 10-13, with support from Thailand’s Department for Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, TCEB and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

TCEB President Dr Supawan Teerarat said the successful bids reflected Phuket’s growing capability to host world-class conventions that align with key global agendas.

“Phuket is a model MICE city that has effectively leveraged MICE events as a mechanism to elevate the city and create opportunities in trade, investment and development,” she said.

She noted that the strategy supports TCEB’s broader goal of decentralising international events beyond Bangkok and developing regional MICE cities with distinctive branding aligned to local strengths.

For Phuket, those strengths centre on sustainable tourism, inclusive community networks and a fast-growing wellness sector.

ECONOMIC SPILLOVER

Phuket Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam said international conferences generate benefits beyond visitor spending.

“International conferences generate benefits beyond tourism, spreading value to local businesses and communities,” he said. “Hosting these major events demonstrates Phuket’s readiness as an international MICE city, enhances the island’s image, attracts investment and supports sustainable economic growth.”

The projected B351.4mn in economic impact is expected to flow across hotels, transport operators, food and beverage providers, event services and related supply chains.

Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, President of the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, who led the bids for GSTC 2026 and GWS 2026, credited strong public–private collaboration.

He said the events align with Phuket’s seven strategic priorities and are intended to translate the island’s sustainability credentials and world-class wellness services into measurable global competitiveness, while safeguarding local wellbeing.

TCEB said the three conferences collectively reinforce Phuket’s positioning around three global priorities: sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and wellness.

Phuket already benefits from an active sustainable tourism network, including government agencies, attractions and hotels that are members of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The province is also working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Sustainable Development targets through 2030 and has been selected as a pilot city for the National Ecosystem Assessment to support biodiversity conservation.

InterPride 2026 comes amid significant legislative developments in Thailand, including progress on equal marriage and ongoing work on gender recognition and labour rights reforms. Organisers say Phuket’s multicultural and LGBTQIA+-friendly environment strengthens its reputation as a welcoming international destination and broadens its appeal to diverse traveller segments.

Meanwhile, GWS 2026 is expected to spotlight Thailand’s ambition to position itself as a leading “Wellness Economy” hub under the national 20-year strategy. With its concentration of five-star hotels, medical facilities and alternative health providers, Phuket is already regarded as a regional centre for medical and wellness tourism.

Industry leaders say the summit will provide local operators with direct access to global investors and emerging trends, including preventative healthcare and “health span” services, enabling them to innovate and expand.
