German tourist drowns in Krabi

A German tourists drowned in front of his 30-year-old son and wife close to the island of Lao La Ding in Krabi yesterday (February 12), a place well known for having a strong current.

At 6pm, Prachasantisook rescue workers brought the body of the German tourist, Martin Deutsch Hofstetter, 58, to the Neuaklong Hospital in Krabi.

Rescue workers and police were told that at around 4pm, the victim, his wife and his son went for a swim near Koh Lao La Ding.

The victim was dragged away by the current. His son tried to help but failed due to the man̕s weight.

Residents who witnessed the incident jumped into the water to help pull the body to shore and administered first aid before local rescue arrived. Unfortunately, they were unable to save Mr Hofstetter.

Klongkhanan Police Lead Inspector, Lt Col Kittichet Kittirattanasombat revealed that the autopsy report from the hospital stated that the victim had drowned due to water in-take.

The victim was very big and suffered ill-healh.

The victim̕s relatives did not want any further investigation into Mr Hofstetter death, and will wait for the hospital to release the body so that it can be flown back to Germany for the funeral.
