Played at the Samut Sakhon Wuthichai School, about 20 minutes west of the Thai capital, Phuket were in 5th placed going into the match against the league’s 4th placed team.
To the delight of the home crowd it was the ‘Cheerful Mudskippers’ who drew first blood in the 7th minute through a goal by Latthaphon Runleuang.
The equalizer came 9 minutes laters when the Andaman Pearl’s Anuwat Pannopha stole the ball and on the ensuing counter attack, played a brilliant combination through Thanakorn Piyaprichatut, which was completed with a goal by Thanakorn Penpakul.
Despite a close Phuket shot that was questionably denied by the referee, the score remained at a 1-1 deadlock at the half time whistle.
The travelling “Power Blue” contingent were sent in a frenzy four minutes into the half on a set play when Phuket’s Piyaprichayut laid off the ball to Brazilian sensation, Edson “Gugu” Silva finding space the box, where he drove the ball home to give his side the lead, 2-1.
But the home side kept their heads up and made good of a free kick on the 29th minute in front of the a walled-off Phuket goal, by opting on an evasive pass to Latthaphon who’d skirted around Phuket’s wall to beat the keeper from the left side and score his second of the match, levelling the score.
Only a minute later, the Mudskippers lived up to their ‘Cheerful’ nickname when their Ekarsit Kaeokongmueang narrowly beat Phuket’s keeper for what would be the winning goal.
The score remained 3-2 through to the final whistle in the favour of Samut Sakhon, who with 19 points after 9 matches, were elevated to 2nd of the league, inferior only to the league’s only unbeaten side, Chonburi who have 25 points from their 8 wins and a draw their only draw, in which they shared points with Phuket.
