The crash occurred at about 8:30pm on Wednesday (May 6) at the curve on the north side of Nong Harn lake as the Dutchman and the woman headed south from Patong into Karon, Karon Police confirmed.

Pol Lt Col Eaksak Khwanwan, an investigating officer at Karon Police Station, was notified of the accident by the station’s radio centre and arrived at the scene with Pol Col Pathapi Srichai, Superintendent of Karon Police.

Police found a damaged van, registered in Phuket, driven by Somyot Thammawat, and a heavily damaged motorcycle, registered in Bangkok.

The motorcycle was being ridden by Dutch national Lauzon Ismail Talal, with his French female companion* riding pillion. Both sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Patong Hospital, police reported.

According to the initial police investigation and CCTV footage reviewed by officers, the motorcycle rider lost control while negotiating the curve, crossed into the wrong lane and crashed head-on into the van, which was travelling on its correct side of the road.

Police said investigators examined the scene, prepared a scene map and continued gathering evidence.

Patong Hospital later informed police that the Frenchwoman had died from her injuries.

Police have identified Mr Lauzon Ismail Talal as the person responsible for the crash as the investigation continues.
