Wichit Police Deputy Chief of Investigation Pol Lt Wacharakorn Suwan was informed of the accident at 2:19am.
Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene, on a sharp curve near Ao Nam Bo School, to find the foreign man, not yet named in police reports, unresponsive and without a pulse.
The man was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital, but was pronounced dead.
The passenger on the motorbike, a foreign female, sustained only minor injuries and awaited assistance by the roadside.
Another friend, also on a motorbike and who witnessed the accident, accompanied the group.
At last report police were still investigating the accident.
The nationalities of the man killed and the woman injured were not released.
Since the start of the year, 145 people have died in road accidents in Phuket, according to the daily notice issued by the Phuket office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Phuket) earlier today.
A further 20,760 people have been injured in road accidents in Phuket during the same period.
In total, 82% of accidents involved motorbikes, with the remaining 18% involving cars.
