The sighting came to light after a Facebook user, identified as ‘Will Thanat’, posted photos and video footage yesterday (Apr 5) showing a blue container floating at sea. The post included precise coordinates ‒ N8°08.094’ E97°35.565’ ‒ to alert other seafarers operating in the area.
According to the post, the container was seen in waters west of Phuket, where rough waves and strong winds were reported at the time. The user cautioned that the combination of choppy seas and limited visibility could make the object particularly hazardous for passing boats.
The post quickly gained traction online, drawing widespread attention and prompting concern among maritime operators and the public. While many commenters raised safety issues, others reacted light-heartedly, joking about the container’s contents.
Despite the humour, the presence of a drifting container poses a genuine risk, particularly to fishing vessels and tourist boats navigating offshore routes. In poor weather conditions or low visibility, such large debris can be difficult to detect, increasing the likelihood of collisions.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether the container has been secured or removed. Calls have been made for relevant agencies to investigate the incident urgently and issue formal navigation advisories if required.
The repeated sightings of containers floating in the sea around Phuket come amid ongoing efforts to manage the aftermath of the February sinking of the cargo vessel SEALLOYD ARC, which went down southwest of Phuket.
Authorities have been tracking floating debris from the wreck, including containers that may have broken free and drifted with ocean currents.
Meanwhile, boat operators in the area are urged to remain vigilant, monitor updates from officials, and exercise heightened caution when travelling through waters west of Mai Khao.
