The inspection, carried out at 9am, was led by Phuket Provincial Palad (Chief Administration Officer) Rungruang Thimabut under orders from Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn, following complaints from local residents alleging land seizure and intimidation by influential groups.

The multi-agency team included Member of Parliament Chalermpong Saengdee, provincial and district officials, forestry officers, Border Patrol Police and officers from Karon Police Station, along with local leaders and affected residents. The area inspected lies within the Nakkerd Hills National Forest Reserve.

Officials reported finding widespread forest encroachment, including land clearing, road construction and the building of residential structures and shops within the protected area.

Five individuals were arrested at the scene for violations of the Forest Act, accused of encroaching on and clearing forest land. One suspect was additionally charged with illegal possession of a firearm. All were handed over to Karon Police for further legal action.

During the operation, authorities also discovered four elephants chained by their legs within the forest. The Mueang Phuket District Livestock Office was called in to assess the situation, with initial findings indicating the animals were being used for logging work. Officials are considering seizure of the elephants as part of enforcement measures.

Further irregularities were identified, including illegal cabling laid into the area and preparations for new tourism-related developments. Reports indicated land plots were being informally divided and offered for sale despite the area’s protected status.

Residents told officials they had been unable to access their homes normally due to threats and the presence of armed individuals, raising concerns over safety and livelihoods. They urged authorities to take urgent action to restore order and ensure their rights are protected.

Speaking after the inspection, Mr Rungruang said the governor had ordered strict enforcement against encroachers and any influential figures involved, stressing the need to protect both natural resources and the rights of local residents.

MP Chalermpong said he would forward all findings and complaints to relevant agencies, including the Royal Forest Department and land authorities, to ensure a transparent investigation and appropriate legal action.

Officials confirmed that a full investigation is now underway, with legal proceedings to be pursued against those responsible and efforts to restore the forest area to follow.
