Fishing is a very popular sport that can be appreciated by all ages on many different levels. Whether it’s serious anglers or families enjoying fun fishing, this diverse sport has something for everyone and especially in and around the Phuket area.

In future articles we will cover both saltwater fishing in the surrounding Andaman Sea and freshwater fishing in both, beautiful man-made lakes and the natural lakes and rivers of the nearby Khao Sok area.

As an angler of over 40 years I have learned to always do some research before every fishing outing. Fishing is not a perfect science but a well informed angler will always catch more fish. To assist you, the reader, we will provide accurate information in all articles so you can make informed decisions on how to spend your valuable recreational time and hard earned money.

We will happily share tips and techniques to help you maximise return from your efforts. Watch for interviews with credible captains, professional guides and resort owners who are committed to your fishing success.

We will focus on the freshwater fishing scene this month and highlight one of the most well-known fishing lakes in the area. The beautiful lake resort known as Exotic Fishing Thailand (EFT) is conveniently located just one hour north of Phuket Airport and an 80 minutes from Krabi and Khao Lak.

The man-made lake of 10 acres is set in a beautiful setting surrounded by stunning limestone karsts and wild jungle.

The most exciting thing about EFT is the lake’s inhabitants which include over 60 different exotic fish species. The most sought after specimens are the Amazon monster Arapaima and the Thai heavy weight the Giant Mekong Catfish, both of which are present to over 150kilograms.

EFT has the largest concentration of Arapaima of over 50kg in all of Thailand.

Most of our fish are grown from fry sourced in Thailand from breeding stock originating from Thailand’s popular aquarium industry. Other popular species include Siamese Carp, Amazon and Asian Redtail Catfish, Alligator Gar, Goonch Catfish and many other Thai and Amazon favourites.

All equipment and a reasonable amount of bait is provided along with direction and/or assistance from enthusiastic fishing guides. All fishing is ‘Catch and Release’ and no Lure Fishing or outside equipment is allowed in an effort to guarantee the safe release of all fish.

When netted, fish are kept in the water where they are given oxygen and sprayed with an antiseptic spray where required.

Fishing is done from comfortable lakeside fishing huts built for privacy and shelter from the elements. Luxury Mountain View accommodation is also available in modern spacious bungalows. The lakeside restaurant is well known for its Thai and international dishes which can also be served in your sala while fishing. A kids favourite is the fish park where both kids and adults can feed the Arapaima and other species in several feeding ponds.

The best prices are available directly by email request with specials for families and groups. Fishing at this location is not cheap but the opportunity to catch some of the world’s biggest species makes it great value..

Dragging an animal around via a steel hook in its mouth, until it dies, or is put thru huge distress, then let go via the lovely 'catch and release' theme .............. great stuff. Nice humans. Sport fishing should be banned completely.
