First lot of local COVID vaccine produced

BANGKOK: The first batch of ChulaCov19, the first messenger-RNA vaccine developed in Thailand, has been produced and is awaiting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the first two phases of human trials, a government spokesperson said yesterday (May 7).

The first lot of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chulalongkorn University researchers was produced by Thailand-based BioNet-Asia Co Ltd, reports the Bangkok Post. If all trial results meet the requirements, the vaccine is expected to be registered for use by the end of this year, deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said.

According to the Chula Vaccine Research Center, ChulaCov19 is safe and has a higher efficacy than the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine against the coronavirus. The Pfizer vaccine has an efficacy of 95% against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Production of the vaccine was supported by B2.31 billion in funding approved by the cabinet in November last year.

“The government wants Thailand to be a country capable of creating, conducting research and development and producing its own vaccine, which is in accordance with its 10-year strategic plan to become a medical hub (by 2026),” Ms Rachada said.

“The goal was set before the COVID-19 pandemic began, and by becoming a vaccine production centre, more Thai people will have access to the vaccine.”

Ms Rachada said ChulaCov19 had passed two preliminary stages of trials on volunteers, with lab results showing safe, effective responses to the virus. “The antibodies generated by ChulaCov19 were higher than from Pfizer vaccines used in Thailand,” she said, quoting the Chula Vaccine Research Centre.

Thailand will pursue domestic production of the vaccine in the next phase of the project, she added.

@Kurt As you always like to talk about "Chinese vaccines" and as you like to call those vaccines "sugar water" , how come that many European countries with their superior vaccines do have a infection rate between 25 % and over 40% of their population ? Look at he Netherlands . 8 million Covid cases and a population of 17 million People.

christysweet | 09 May 2022 - 10:47:10

China developed the 50% efficacy Sinovax. China has a zero Covid policy because they know should the virus get out of control they cannot possibly cope. Take heed Thailand.

Kurt | 09 May 2022 - 09:12:42

When Covid-19 broke out there was world wide a 'fast need' of vaccines. By now we know there are serious side effects of some vaccines. ( women period interruptions, lost of hair, organ effects). Chinese vaccines were/are not 'strong' ( see what is going on in China). Now is no need to come up with new vaccines. Upgrade/tune the present vaccines that are working best.

DeKaaskopp | 08 May 2022 - 12:56:51

@Kurt How fast they developed vaccines in other countries and distributed those vaccines ? You think there was enough time to check side effects on " not yet born babies"

Kurt just cannot help himself. He insists on holding himself out as an expert even on topics about which he knows absolutely nothing. Can his family stage an intervention of some sort?

It is far to early to call ChulaCov19 a better vaccine than Pfizer! ChulaCov19 is still in test/trial phase coming 7 months at least. Much research need to be done, like effects on not yet born babies, Organ cancer possibilities, etc. And stop that hub thinking. If Thailand needs a hub, fight drugs! Specially on Phuket, which is sinking under the drugs load.
