So far, there have been 15 reported accidents (four on Thursday, two on Friday and nine yesterday - April 13, the first day of Songkran itself ), with 16 people injured (four on Thursday, two on Friday and 10 yesterday).
Although Phuket failed to grant Governor Maitree Intusut’s wish for no accidents or injuries, the figures so far are significantly better than in the country as a whole.
MCOT Online news reported that in the first three days there were 173 deaths and 1,526 injuries nationwide, exceeding the 2012 counts.
Phuket authorities are keeping their fingers crossed that this year’s death toll will remain at zero and there will be fewer accidents and injuries than last year, when there were 43 crashes over the Seven Days of Danger, resulting in four deaths.
Those numbers were already an improvement over 2011, when there were seven deaths in Phuket in 52 crashes.
