Police Lieutenant Colonel Chanan Mekchai, Inspector of Investigations at Patong Police Station, received notification of the incident just after 4am this morning and advanced to the scene outside of the Aspery Hotel on Patong Beach Rd.

Fellow police officers joined Pol Col Chanan at the scene as well as officials from the Phuket Kusontham Foundation.

Arriving at the scene the officials discovered the body of a man lying face down in the road, with a damaged red and grey Yamaha N-Max motorcycle on the pavement nearby.

A nearby power pole had clear signs of damage, leading police officers at the scene conducting the initial investigtaion to surmise that the man had lost control of his vehicle and collided with it as the front wheel of his bike was completely destroyed.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body taken to Patong Hospital by officers from the Kusontham Foundation in order that a thorough autopsy could be performed.

The damaged motorcyle was taken by police to Patong Police Station so be examined as part of ongoing investigtaions into the cause of the incident.

Initial investigation by police officers revealed that the deceased was a 48-year-old Filipino national who worked as a DJ at bar on Bangla Rd (unnamed in police reports). The Phuket News has declined to publish the man’s name pending confirmation that his next of kin and family have been informed of the incident.

Patong police confirmed they are coordinating with the Philippine Embassy to contact relatives so as the dead man’s body be retireved and repatriated or administered a religious burial service in Phuket in due course.
