Saysunee made history after becoming the first woman to win three gold medals - epee, foil and sabre - at a single Paralympics in Paris IN 2024.
However, she has never competed in the ASEAN Para Games as the sport was not included in the tournament since the 2008 Games in Thailand, reports the Bangkok Post.
The 51-year-old will compete in two events - epee class B and foil class B - in the Jan 20-26 tournament and she is hoping to win both events.
“I have never represented Thailand at the ASEAN Para Games because wheelchair fencing was not included in the tournament until now since I joined the national team. It’s great that the sport is returning this year as the tournament will be held in Thailand,” said Saysunee.
“It is also great for the Southeast Asian athletes to develop their skills because there are a lot of international wheelchair fencing competitions. It is also featured in the Paralympics and the Asian Para Games.
“I’ve been training continuously since the 2024 Paralympics, so I’m very well-prepared. I want to win gold medals in both events in front of my Thai fans so I hope there will be a lot of support.
“I also plan to use this competition as preparation for the world ranking tournaments in February in Italy, and the 5th Asian Para Games in October in Japan,” she added.
Saysunee is Thailand’s most decorated wheelchair fencer. She won gold medals at all major tournaments including the Paralympics, Asian Para Games, World Championships and Asian Championships.
The 13th ASEAN Para Games will feature men’s and women’s wheelchair fencing in epee, foil and sabre.
