The incident occurred in front of children and parents who had gathered in the playground of Muang Phuket Municipal School on Phonpol Rd.
Maj Rakkhet Munmuang from Phuket City Police arrived at the scene and told reporters, “The assaulted man, Yan, 21, from Myanmar suffered a head injury. We found him sitting against a wall next to a pool of blood, beside him was a pen gun.
“He was taken to Vachira Hospital so he could be treated for his injuries. Officers will be monitoring him while we investigate the incident,” he said.
“Yan told us that he and his friend had an altercation with a group of teenagers behind a local market. He said that he found the gun at the market so he picked it up and tried to shoot at the teenagers as he and his friend were outnumbered. However, the gun malfunctioned.
“Yan and his friend ran into the school hoping to lose the teens but they caught up with them and started to attack them. His friend was also injured but ran off when we arrived,” Maj Rakkhet added.
The incident happened at 11am while Deputy Police Chief Lt Col Narong Lucksanawimon of Karon Police was running an errand in Phuket Town. He noticed people shouting to a group of teenagers inside the school so stopped to check what was happening.
Lt Col Narong said, “When I arrived at the scene young students and teachers were panicking because one of the men had a gun, but the group soon dispersed, leaving one left one injured man on the ground.”
