Let’s start the journey in Phuket downtown market, locally known as Talad Sod. Forget about air-conditioned supermarkets where products are sealed in nice packages and sold at high prices. This local market offers various products, especially fresh and dry food.
Products like meat, seafood, vegetables and fruits are freshly presented in the morning ready for the early-bird shoppers looking for affordable, quality produce.
Aside from specialising in fresh products, Talad Sod is also the bus station where the local non-air-conditioned bus or sawng taeos are located.
These can take you to various impressive destinations around the island. The bus routes mainly go to beaches such as Patong, Kamala, Surin, Rawai, Kata and Karon where you can find other connecting fascinating spots in the area. The price per trip costs only B20-B40 max.
However, before taking the bus anywhere else, it must be noted that the neighbouring area of Talad Sod should not be missed.
Ensure you take a little walk and get some memorable photos in Phuket Old Town.
Thalang Rd and Dibuk Rd are close to the market. The Sino-Portugese shop houses in the area are well preserved by the local community and display a traditional, yet lively vibe that mixes the Chinese and Muslim cultures.
Not only is the geography of the area attractive but the traditional food, beverages and outfits available in the century-old shops along the road, make it a unique and impressive place to take a stroll.
Your lunch can be filled with traditional Phuketian dishes in Khru Wilai or Kopitiam by Wilai where prices range from B60 to B150.
If you are interested in Buddhism, the sawng taeos can take you to some famous and respectful temples on the island, such as Wat Chalong and Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple). Both of these temples are situated in the Chalong district area, on the way to Rawai Beach.
After seeing the gorgeous architecture of these Buddhist temples and getting blessed by a monk, be sure to check out the most beautiful sunset viewpoint: Phrom Thep Cape, which a local bus can also take you to for as little as B20.
After a long day, you will most likely feel tired and hungry. Seafood is a must in Phuket, and you can find affordable tasty dishes in the local area of Rawai sea gypsy village in the south of the island.
Though seafood prices have increased with the increase in tourism to Phuket, the freshness of the food still remains and it will definitely be worth all the money you have left after the trip!
