The match, which will take place at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town (7pm kick-off), will signal a big step in the island's footballing venture. UD Almeria's recent addition of Thai national team superstar Teerasil Daengda, who will also take to the field on August 6, is just another reason that Phuket FC management and local officials are salivating at the future of football on the island.
“This match is one that Phuket and Thai football fans have been waiting for. We are very lucky to have this opportunity of watching world-class players at Surakul Stadium,” said Chairman Pamuke Achariyachai in a statement.
“Phuket FC players and staff will gain invaluable experience from competing in the match so that we can improve ourselves to be in the top rank of Thai football.”
Team officials met with major sponsors of the event and Gov Maitri Inthusut at Provincial Hall in Phuket Town to discuss the historic match and possible events surrounding the game.
“We will be a good host to them and I'm quite sure that we would impress everyone by our friendship and good tourist attractions,” Gov Maitri said.
The match is part of the “LFP World Challenge by Chang”, the Spanish league's effort to promote La Lige overseas and includes friendly matches against local clubs in Europe Asia as well as North and South America until mid-2016.
Chairman Pamuke hopes the inclusion of Daengda will spur local youth footballers to take the game more seriously.
“I'm sure that Teerasil Daengda is going to be an inspiration for children and Thai youth who play football to develop themselves and become a professional in the future,” he said.
Just four days after the August 6 event, a team of former English Premier League players will take on a team of Thailand legends, also at Surakul Stadium, marking a big week of football for Phuket.
