Dtac launches 4G Internet service in Phuket

Dtac antennae across Phuket have now been upgraded to provide 4G signals and, as an inducement for people to switch from 3G, Dtac is offering 1GB of download free per month for four months.

The provider estimates that about 10 per cent of mobile phone users in Phuket are already equipped to use 4G.

Panya Vechbanyongratana, Dtac’s Senior Vice President, Regional Business Head – South & West, said that the island was chosen to receive the service before other provinces because “Phuket has lots of tourist and users. We will introduce the service later in other provinces.”

He explained that the free offer is for four Gigabytes of download over four months. “If the user goes beyond that amount, the service will drop back to 3G.

“Existing subscribers can come to a Dtac centre before February 28 to register for the free 4G service and to get their sim card changed.”

To use 4G, subscribers must have a device (smartphone or tablet) that is compatible with 4G, must have the sim card changed, and must register their number with Dtac’s TRI-Net network.

Anyone who wants to try this package for free can get their phone set up and have the sim card changed at any Dtac service centre.

Users on other systems such as AIS or True can migrate their existing phone number to Dtac and then get 4G.

Dtac claims its service is superior because it is the only one running simultaneously at 1800 MHZ, 850 MHZ and 2100 MHZ frequencies. “This ultimately makes dtac the network with the widest bandwidth, providing better and more effective communication, clearer voice calls, smooth and uninterrupted service for high-definition video streaming and multiplayer gaming,” it says on its 4G website page.
